highlight stops working after adding multiple bonds

1) select Single Bond tool from toolbar
2) click on canvas to create ethane
3) hover over one of the atoms in the ethane and it is
highlighted
4) click to add a bond and create propane
5) hover over each atom and bond, observe that none are
highlighted
